Morgantown Monongalia Metropolitan Planning Organization

The Morgantown Monongalia Metropolitan Planning Organization (MMMPO) leads the development of the region's long range transportation plan and transportation improvement program through a partnership among the WV DOT, local elected officials, local planning and transit directors, the business community, and citizens across the greater Morgantown region.

 

The core functions and responsibilities of the MPO is to 

  • Establish and manage a fair and impartial setting for effective regional decision-making in the metropolitan area.

  • Evaluate transportation alternatives, scaled to the size and complexity of the region, to the nature of its transportation issues, and to the realistically available options.

  • Maintain a Long-Range Transportation Plan (LRTP)

  • Develop a program based on the long-range transportation plan and designed to serve the area's goals, using spending, operating, management, and financial tools.

  • Involve the public: Involve the general public and all the significantly affected sub-groups in the four essential functions listed above.

Funding 

The MPO is funded by federal grant programs authorized by the U.S. Congress and by contributions from local government and the West Virginia DOT. Funding for roads, bridges, transit, and walking and bicycling facilities is managed through the transportation improvement programs.

Authority

The MPO has the authority to plan, prioritize, and recommend transportation projects for federal and state funding. It is responsible to for ensuring the region is in compliance with federal and state planning requirements.
